See Where Famous Movies Were Filmed in Kauai, Hawaii
They finished shooting Jurassic Park on Kaua’i in September of 1992, and Hurricane Iniki came ashore on the 11th while the crew was still here. The storm footage in the film is real. The waves breaking on the rocks while Hammond calls for the evacuation were shot at Nawiliwili Bay, right where the ships tie up.
We will see a giant ape, a pregnant woman and a sleeping giant, and I will tell you the Hawaiian stories behind all three. We will look at ancient heiaus, the Hawaiian places of worship, and a royal fishpond that was old before anybody here had heard of Hollywood.
Hear why we don’t do 3 hour tours on this uncharted desert isle. Four hours, one direction, and an early start so the road is ours. Four, not three. There is a reason for that and it is worth the price of admission on its own.

4-Hour Tour Pricing Guide
Children $95. Adults see pricing table below. There is a $5 charge for tax and card fees.
| # of Adults | Price | Deposit | Balance |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 450 | 55 | 400 |
| 2 | 450 | 110 | 350 |
| 3 | 450 | 165 | 300 |
| 2 adults, 2 children | 490 | 220 | 290 |
| 4 | 600 | 220 | 400 |
| 5 | 750 | 275 | 500 |
| 6 | 900 | 330 | 600 |
| 7 | 1,050 | 385 | 700 |
Price
$150 an adult, $95 a child 11 and under, and the tour does not go for less than $450. A $50 Premium Private Tour Option closes the van to your party only, and it is available to the first party to book that date only.
If a party comes to less than $450
Two adults computes to $300. Two adults and one child computes to $395. Neither reaches the minimum, so that party has two choices:
- Make up the difference and the tour runs on their date.
- Book anyway and wait to see whether somebody else takes the empty seats. This is an open tour, so it does happen.
Doug will tell them honestly how their date is looking.
Deposit
$55 a seat, taken by credit card. That is $50 toward the tour plus $5 in tax and card fees. Two seats is $110, three is $165, on up to seven. The balance is due after the tour, and I will explain how when I answer your Booking Request form.
Departure time
8:00 am dockside for cruise guests. 9:00 am for east side pickups (non cruise ship guests).
Duration
4 hours. Not 3. Ask me about the most famous three hour tour in history and how that one turned out.

Group size
1 to 7. One van, seven seats.
Participation requirements
None. There is no walking on this tour to speak of. We stay in the van for the most part. There is a lot to see, so time out of the van is limited, but of course there are photo stops along the way.
Included
Water. Most people bring their own refillable these days and that is fine by me.
Not included
No lunch stop. You are back before lunch. No luggage, see below.
What to bring
Just your phone. There is no beach time on this tour.
Staff
I am your driver, Doug.
Cancellations
Cancellations within 1 week of the tour are charged 25% of the tour cost, minus the deposit. Cancellations within 3 days are charged 50% of the tour cost, minus the deposit. Cancellations within 24 hours are charged the full tour cost, minus the deposit. I am a solo operator, and each booking is my commitment to be available to you for a tour. Last minute cancellations cost me dearly, as I have little chance to rebook. If I do rebook your date, there is no charge to you.
Overview
Kaua’i is basically round, like the face of a clock, and I use that to explain where things are. Lihue sits at about 5 o’clock. Kapa’a is at 3. Kilauea is at 1. This tour runs 5 up to 1 and comes back the same way, because there is one highway and no loop road, and there never will be.
We start at the harbor. The Iniki footage in Jurassic Park was shot right there in Nawiliwili Bay, and I will tell you that story before we are out of the parking lot.
Ten minutes on, the Huleia valley opens below the Menehune Fishpond. That is a royal Hawaiian fishpond, built by hand long before any of this, and it is also the jungle Harrison Ford runs out of at the start of Raiders of the Lost Ark. Over the ridge from it is Kipu, where they put the plane down in Six Days Seven Nights and where George Clooney spent a good part of The Descendants. Three films and a piece of ancient engineering, all from one pullout.
Then Wailua Falls, eighty feet straight down, seen from the pullout without anybody leaving their seat. That waterfall opened Fantasy Island every week for six years.
Through Wailua we have Lydgate and Hikinaakala Heiau, a place of refuge and sanctuary, and Coco Palms, where Elvis got married on the river in Blue Hawaii. That film sold Hawaii to America. Sixty years later Jungle Cruise shot on the same river. Above all of it lies the Sleeping Giant, and he has a story too.
Up Kuamo’o Road there is a stand of rainbow eucalyptus, and past it the road that runs toward the Jurassic Park gate. I will show you how far a rental car gets before it regrets the decision.
Then north through Kapa’a, which played San Jose, Costa Rica in the opening of Jurassic Park. Past mile marker 14 the Anahola range comes up on your left and there is no mistaking it. That is Kalalea, and I will tell you what the name means, which is the pregnant woman. Kong is sitting on top of her. Once you have seen her you can never unsee her.
We finish at the Kilauea lighthouse lookout, where Lilo & Stitch is set, and then we turn for home.
FAQs
A three hour tour. A three hour tour. If you are over 35 you just heard the music. They shot that pilot on Kaua’i in 1963, and the Minnow was a boat they found in Honolulu, towed over here and went at with a sledgehammer to make it look properly wrecked. Nobody on that three hour tour made it home.
Mine is four hours and you will be back when I said you would.
Fifty dollars holds each seat, plus five in tax and card fees, so $55 for one, $110 for two, $165 for three and so on. That goes on a credit card through Stripe. The balance is due after the tour, and I will explain how when I answer your Booking Request form.
Because the van and the morning cost the same whether there are two of you or seven, and $450 is where that works out. You have two choices. Pay the $450 and the tour runs on your date, or book anyway and wait to see whether somebody else takes the empty seats, because this is an open tour and that does happen. Either way I will let you know when others book and we reach the minimum to run the tour.
Children 11 and under are $95. The deposit is the same $55 as anybody else, because the deposit holds a seat and a seat is a seat. Two seats is $110, three is $165, on up to seven.
It is one of the best uses of it. You are checked out by eleven and your flight is hours away, and the choice is this or the terminal. A 9:00 am start for east side pickups (non cruise ship guests) has you finished around 1:00. A 9:00 start on non cruise ship pickups can be negotiated. Just ask.
I can only carry carry-on size luggage. My PUC license covers passengers, not baggage, so I cannot haul bags. Leave them at the bell desk of the hotel you checked out of and collect them on your way to the airport. Every property here does this and they do it all day long. I worked a concierge desk on this island for years, so I can tell you that with some confidence. Do not count on the airport, because Lihue has no lockers and no baggage storage of any kind. We finish back at that hotel, so you collect your bags on the way out and go straight to your flight. Or, for an extra fee, I can take you and your bags the short distance to the airport. Just ask.
No, and here is why. That is Moloa’a Bay, and the people who live around it have asked that tours stay out. It is a small beach and a small neighborhood and they are right. I tell you the story on the way past and we leave them in peace.
East side only on this one. Lihue, the Sonesta or the Marriott properties, the Walmart in Lihue, or Kapa’a, and dockside at Nawiliwili if you are off a ship. You are welcome from anywhere on the island, you just have to meet me over here.
Yes, meeting me on the east side. It is about forty minutes over. If you would rather be collected at your door, the 6 hour tours do that.
At restroom stops and at the pullouts where the view is worth it. This is not a walking tour. Four hours and this much island means the seeing happens mostly from your seat.
No. I tell the stories. No screens.
No, and you are back before lunch anyway. What I will do is point out the food trucks I actually eat at as we go past them, so you know where to go when we are done. Snacks in the van are welcome within reason.
Kalalea Mountain, above Anahola, which nobody here calls anything but Kong Mountain. Once you have seen the profile you cannot unsee it. The mountain is also a pregnant woman, and Kong is sitting on top of her. I will tell you what that mountain meant here long before anybody made a film about a great ape.
Not from a van and not from the ground anywhere. Manawaiopuna Falls is on private property in Hanapepe valley and helicopters land there by arrangement. Search Jurassic Falls helicopter tours and you will find who flies there. I get no compensation for my recommendations.
We drive the road that leads toward them, up past the rainbow forest on Kuamo’o. The gates themselves are three and a half miles further on a dirt road that has gone downhill since the storms, and they came down long ago anyway. People try it in rental cars. It does not end well.
Iniki came ashore on September 11, 1992, while the crew was still here finishing up. The storm footage in the film is real, and the waves in the evacuation scene were shot at Nawiliwili. I will fill in the rest on the way out of the harbor.
Yes, easily. This is the most accessible tour I run, because there is almost no walking in it at all.
Not automatically. This one is an open tour, so another party may be aboard. The $50 Premium Private Tour Option closes the van to your party only, and it is available to the first party to book that date only.
Yes, at the $450. You are welcome on this one on your own.
Yes. An 8:00 start puts you back at the pier around noon, well ahead of any all aboard time.
Go to kauaitourguy.com and click Request Booking. The form gets me your phone number, your party size and your billing address, and it keeps everything in one place.
Good to Know
Flying out this afternoon? This is a good way to spend your last day. You are checked out by eleven, your flight is not until the middle of the afternoon, and the alternative is four hours in the Lihue Airport terminal. A 9:00 start has you done around 1:00 with time to spare. A 9:00 start on non cruise ship pickups can be negotiated. Just ask.
I can only carry carry-on size luggage. My PUC license covers passengers, not baggage, so the van cannot take your bags. Here is what to do about it, and it works. Leave them with the bell desk at the hotel you just checked out of. They will hold them for the day and you collect them on your way to the airport. I spent years behind a concierge desk on this island and holding bags for checked out guests is routine, so ask and they will say yes. There is no luggage storage at Lihue Airport, no lockers, nothing, so do not plan on that. I bring you back to that same hotel at the end of the tour, so your bags are right where you left them. Or, for an extra fee, I can take you and your bags the short distance to the airport. Just ask.
The fare is $150 an adult and $95 a child 11 and under, and the tour does not go for less than $450. Three adults comes to exactly the minimum. A smaller party can make up the difference, or book and wait to see whether somebody else takes the empty seats, because this is an open tour. I will tell you honestly how a date is looking. A solo traveler is welcome at the $450.
The deposit is $55 a seat and it holds the seat. Fifty dollars toward the tour plus five in tax and card fees, taken by credit card. Two seats is $110, three is $165, on up to seven. The balance is due after the tour, and I will explain how when I answer your Booking Request(opens in a new tab).
Cruise guests are back aboard well before boarding. From an 8:00 start you are back at the pier around noon. A lot of people do Waimea Canyon on Thursday and this one on Friday.
Pickups are on the east side. Lihue, the Sonesta or the Marriott properties, the Walmart in Lihue, or Kapa’a, and dockside at Nawiliwili for cruise guests. If you are staying in Poipu or Princeville you are welcome on this tour, you just have to meet me on the east side. On a 4 hour tour the drive out to get you would come out of your four hours, and that is not a trade I would make for you.
We stay in the van. Four hours and this much island means restroom stops and photo pullouts, not a walking tour. Nobody has to get out who does not want to, and nobody has to keep up with anybody. For a lot of my guests that is the whole appeal.
There are no movie clips on this tour. I tell you what was shot where and what the crews did to the place. No screens, no video.
We do not go to Moloa’a Bay. They shot the Gilligan’s Island pilot there in 1963 and people ask about it. The folks who live around that beach have made it plain they would rather not have tours coming through, and that is their call to make, so I tell the story from the road and leave the bay to them.
I will text or email you the morning before to confirm the time, the pickup spot and the fare.
The famous Jurassic Park waterfall is not on this tour, and it is not on anybody’s driving tour. Manawaiopuna Falls sits on private land in the back of Hanapepe valley and the only way in is by helicopter. I get no compensation for my recommendations. I just know the island.
Waimea Canyon is not on this tour. That is the 6 hour, and it deserves its own day.
